These immigrants brought along their culture from their countries.They brought their religion, language, and customs.

It helped cause the divide between those who considered themselves the true, 'pure' americans who had settled in America first (After the Native Americans obviously). The immigrants came seeking the golden opportunities widely believed to exist there but the original descendants of the settlers felt uncomfortable because immigrants would work for less (in partic. the chinese for example), had different cultures etc. As a result, segregation,discrimination and inter-racial tension took root in the society as each race kept seperate and to their own communities.
