A few big events in his lifetime (late 1500s and early 1600s):

St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre in France
Defeat of the Spanish Armada--a very big event as England might have been conquered by Spain.
Mary, Queen of Scots, executed on orders of Elizabeth I.
King James Version of the Bible published.

Some literary influences on Shakespeare were the Bible, Holinshead's chronicles of English History, and Boccaccio, the Italian story teller.

The biggest obstacle in my view was that the theatre was not a respectable profession in those days, and was shut down by authorities from time to time. That led to financial problems off and on for him and his partners.
