The term the Era of Good Feeling sounds nice but it doesn't match the actual times - - - actually a historical side note your teacher will hate for me to mention BUT the term 'Era of Good Feeling' was used as a sarcastic jest by a politcian who was bemused by James Monroe's scorched Earth tactics in dealing with his political enemies.

That Said - - -
Writers such as Irving & Cooper, in particular, since I know more about them then the others, though Wirt was well known for his essays and role as Attorney General - - - these writers gave American Literature a voice an identity. Heretofore Americans had relied upon England to supply a good read but by dint of their pens Irving and Cooper gave Americans American stories & tales. Irving in particular aroused a desire to seek out history, even when Irving 'lied' he did so with tongue in cheek & gusto essentially saying "this is what I say if you disagree then you research the subject."
James Fennimore Cooper in particular gave his fellow Americans a link to the not so distant past while establishing the norms & conventions future novelists would follow.
Wirt, Cole, Cooper, Sedqewick, Irving were fiercely American proud of their heritage and they used writing as a way to celebrate their heritage to demonstrate that America had a rich tradition of 'native' stories, stories which served to reveal the varied personalities to be found in America.
