Hi Saddy!

Two reasons:

1) Taft was an isolationist, who opposed America taking up its responsibilities as a great power in maintaining world peace. (He would have led opposition to President George W. Bush within the Republican Party were he alive today.)

Largely because of Senator Taft, and others who felt the way he did, Hitler found the way clear to lead Germany into an aggressive war in Europe. No one was willing to accept responsibility for standing up to the dictators in 1938, when it could still be done at a very low cost. World War II was the result.

2) Taft was a libertarian, against big government in any form. Big military spending was a form of big government. Had he lived, Taft would have applauded President Eisenhower's speech of 1961 cautioning against the "military-industrial complex." Had he lived into the 1980s, he might have saved Communist Russia from collapse, since he could have spared the Moscow regime the stresses which led to the fall of totalitarianism and the liberation of eastern Europe.
