World history helpp.?

Question:i'm suppose to make a poster about the treatment of the handicapped in the 1850's.
butttt, i cant find any articles on google or anything :[[
so please give me info and or pictures about the treatment of them in the 1850's!

Handicaps were basically treated like they were a threat to society. Some people who were still superstitious believed they were posessed. They were put into "homes" where they were often starved and mistreated. The people who worked there often didn't know how to handle the residents so therefore they weren't given proper treatment. A large group was put into one room and there they stayed. The violent ones were put into solitary and kept in a straight jacket pretty much the rest of their lives.

The homes were dirty and many infested w/ rats. The residents were dirty as well (obviously) and some homes even allowed doctors to expirament on the "crazy" people.

People didn't know much about the different mental illnesses so like i said, many were'nt given the proper medications or any medication at all. The homes were basically there to keep the handicaps off the street.
