Position:Home>History> What was "snuff" made out of and why was it used?

Question:Tobacco, dried and ground finely. Used first by French nobility to remove the after stench of the then stinking streets around Paris ,particularly.
Spread to British nobility, and used for same reason.
First used in GB in Edinburgh. Again to remove any residual smell left in the nostrils by the foul street smell.
As addictive as smoking cigarettes, but no worse.

It's Chewing Tabacco

Its tobacco you sniff up your nose and it makes you sneeze

snuff is made of dried tobacco and then finely ground and is a lazely way of smocking

As detailed its powdered tobacco. You get the same effects as smoking or chewing tobacco.
Also causes cancer but in different places.

- European snuff is a dry, smokeless tobacco and is intended to be inhaled or sniffed through the nose.
- American snuff is moist and is intended to be applied to the gums rather than sniffed and is called dipping tobacco.
- In India, Creamy snuff is a paste consisting of tobacco, clove oil, glycerin, spearmint, menthol, and camphor sold in a toothpaste tube and is marketed mainly to women.

People used to think it had medicinal properties. In 1561 Jean Nicot, French ambassador to Portugal, sent Catherine de' Medici snuff " to treat her son's persistent migraines, after which she became a fan of snuff."
In 18th century Britain, the " Gentlewoman's Magazine " advised readers with ailing sight to use the correct type of snuff, " whereby many eminent people had cured themselves so that they could read without spectacles after having used snuff for many years."

snuff is tobacco that has been chopped so it can be snorted up the nose - it is still available in britain, it is usually flavoured - floral or menthol most commonly and varies from course to fine chopped & dry to moist.

Its also DISGUSTING!

Snuff is smokeless tobacco. It is made from dried tobacco leaves with the addition of certain flavors and scents, used mainly as a vice much the same as cigars. There were different types, used in different ways, but traditionally it means Dry/European nasal snuff, which is inhaled or "snuff". Snuff-taking by the Native Americans was first described by a monk named Ramon Pane in 1493, during Columbus' second journey to the Americas. American snuff, unlike European, is moist and is often applied to the gums than sniffed. Prolonged use of the moist variety can often lead to mouth cancer.

It is chewing tobacco

Snuff is made from tobacco and is till widely used today, both here in UK and I believe also the USA, but where chewing tobacco is probably more populare than say snuff.

Personally, I think it's a revolting habit, all that snorting and such.

The most famous snuff taker was undoubtedly Napoleon Boneparte. Boney [as he is called here in England], used to take a large pinch of snuff and throw it into the air and then walk into the cloud of snuff. Stank the place out of dead tobacco pong.
