My favorite question in genealogy!
There are so many of them out there; some are better for recent immigrants, some are better for Colonial days, etc!.
First, have you researched answers here in Yahoo! genealogy!? There are a lot of hints, etc!.
Second, Yahoo! will allow only 10 or so web references; there are thousands!.
Third, no matter the source, there are errors (and I do include "official" records!. Me, I am a skeptic; I don't know of anything the government [at any level] can do well)!.
So, here is my Yahoo! approved list:
You should start by asking all your living relatives about family history!. Then, armed with that information, you can go to your public library and check to see if it has a genealogy department!. Most do nowadays; also, don't forget to check at community colleges, universities, etc!. Our public library has both www!.ancestry!.com and www!.heritagequest!.com free for anyone to use (no library card required)!.
Another place to check out is any of the Mormon's Family History Centers!. They allow people to search for their family history (and, NO, they don't try to convert you)!.
A third option is one of the following websites:

www dot census dot gov/

http://www!.rootsweb!.com/

www dot ukgenweb dot com/

www dot archives dot gov/

http://www!.familysearch!.org/

http://www!.accessgenealogy!.com/!.!.!.

http://www!.cyndislist!.com/

www dot geni dot com/

Cyndi's has the most links to genealogy websites, whether ship's passenger lists, ancestors from Africa, ancestors from the Philippines, where ever and whatever!.

Of course, you may be successful by googling: "john doe, born 1620, plimouth, massachusetts" as an example!.

Good luck and have fun!

Check out this article on five great free genealogy websites:

Then there is the DNA test; if you decide you want to REALLY know where your ancestors came from opt for the DNA test!. Besides all the mistakes that officials commonly make, from 10% to 20% of birth certificates list the father wrong; that is, mama was doing the hanky-panky and someone else was the REAL father!. That won't show up on the internet or in books; it WILL show up in DNA!.
I used www!.familytreedna!.com which works with the National Geographics Genotype Program!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

US Gen Web and RootsWeb are my favorites, but there are 400,000+ and which one is good for you depends on what you are interested in and which country you live in!. If you search the resolved questions in this category alone (use "Advanced") for the word "Free", you'll see that your question comes up 8 - 50 times a week, and we top 10 take turns answering it!. I'm on my backup machine or I'd paste my standard answer here!.

You may be mistaking the ancestry ads, which ask for an ancestor's name, for the free part of the form!. Some Roots Web pages have two places to enter names; the ancestry ad at the top, or the real form on the bottom!.

Don't expect to find you or your parents, unless your aunt has spent 20 years researching and published her work on the web!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

What is the best free genealogy site out there!? or something very similar to it is a question that comes up repeatedly here!. The answer can actually vary!. Are you looking for your recent ancestors or are you already back many generations!.

If you’re just starting I’d recommend that you discuss with your parents about what they may already know!. After discussing it with them and starting your research, you might want to talk further with your aunts and uncles and your grandparents if they’re still around!. If not, do they have a brother or sister!. Fifteen or twenty years ago I was surprised to find out that my grandfather had a brother who had moved down south many years ago!. On a return trip from Florida I stopped and visited him learning a little about my grandfathers siblings and parents!. I had gained enough information now to start searching online as I knew what to look for!.

For starters online, one might look at www!.familysearch!.org!. This is a great site that the Morman church has online!. As part of their religious beliefs they research their family history!. And over the years they’ve accumulated one of the most vast repositories of genealogical information!. It’s definitely worth checking into!. I did and found quite a few ‘leads’ here!. I called them ‘leads’ as the research was done by others and is not always documented!. But, it’s a great place to start!.

From there, a beginner might want to go to www!.rootsweb!.ancestry!.com and search through several of the options that are available there!. Their World Connect Project contains a vast number of family trees that have been donated by various people who have researched their ancestry and want to share it with others!. Be aware though, that there are many errors within their family trees!. Many of them will be obvious upon reading!. If an individual has mistakes in their work and posts it online that error will be picked up by a good many other people!. One very simple thing to look for is that most girls who are born in 1843 and marry in 1857 didn’t have their first son in 1817!. But, you’ll often find something similar here!. If so, STOP!. Don’t believe that one!. I always classified this source in the same category as some of the files in family search!. They are merely leads to follow!.

One good part of roots web is the Social Security Death Index!. Anyone who has a Social Security Number, and has died, is listed here IF their heirs collected the Social Security Death Benefit!. While everyone isn’t included here you’ll find it to be one of your best sources that is documented and is free!.

I could go on and on as there are many good sites!. I would recommend that another of the first places you search is www!.cyndislist!.com , a site that I would describe as a dictionary of ALL genealogy sites that are online!. It should definitely show you where to look for more information that may be specific to your needs!.

As one of my grandparents came from Canada, I have also found www!.automatedgenealogy!.com/index!.html to be more than helpful as it has the Canadian Census of 1851 and those that are more recent thru 1911 and is a free site!.
The sites are out there!. Go for them while they’re still free!. Happy hunting!
