Well, being of Israeli descent and being Jewish aren't quite exactly the same thing!. The Jewish people originate from the Tribe of Judah, which is one of the twelve tribes of Israel!. So saying that you're Jewish also says you are of Israeli descent!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Its possible I suppose but most American Jews don't trace their ancestry back to Israel -- unless you're willing to go back about 2000 years to the Diaspora!.

IOW, "Jewish" does not equal "Israeli"!. There are Jews living all over the world, not just Israel, and there are many Israelis who are not Jewish, they're Muslim or Christian!. "Jewish" is a religion, and Jews sort of regard themselves as a kind of extended family!. its NOT a nationality or an ethnic group or a "race"!. OTOH, "Israeli" is a nationality -- someone who is born and raised in the State of Israel, or who moves to Israel and takes up citizenship there, regardless of whatever religion he or she practices!.

If your parents or grandparents were born and raised in the modern State of Israel (which has only been in existence as a nation since 1948) then you can consider yourself an Israeli-American!. Otherwise, if all of your grandparents or great-grandparents came from Eastern Europe or Russia like your great-grandma did, then you'd be of Russian or Eastern European ancestry, not Israeli!.

But if your mom, or your ancestors, converted to Christianity sometime in the past, then you're NOT JEWISH!. In order to be Jewish, you have to have been born to a Jewish mother!. Even if your mom's ancestors were Jewish at one time, if she is now a practicing Christian, then she is no longer Jewish and neither are you!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Your Russian ancestry is probably where it comes in!. Israel has only been a nation for about 60 years!. Most of the Israeli came from other European countries, particularly after WW2!. There was a nation of Israel back in Bible times but it was dispersed throughout the world a long time ago!.

Reform Jews define a Jew by the religion only!.

Orthodox and Conservative Judaism defines a Jew by the mother only, not the religion or the father!. They state they get the nation from the mother and the tribe from the father!. If they don't have a Jewish father they belong to the tribe of the nearest male relative on the mother's side of the family!. So if your mother stated she was Jewish!. then according to Orthodox and Conservative Judaism, you are a Jew whether you adhere to the Jewish religion or not!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It's possible, but not necessary, lots of Jews have never been to Israel!. The modern state of Israel has only been around since after WWII, so if your ggg grandmother was already in America, that would let her out!. Ask your mother about the rest of the family, you'd only need to check a couple of generations!. P!.S!. 'American of Israeli descent' would be a nationality, 'Jewish' is a religion, so you could be both!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
