The most prominent tribe in Virginia history is the Chickahominy tribe which was a part of the Powhatan's confederation of 8 tribes!. Incidentally, the chief's name was not Powhatan, he was THE powhatan, which meant chief!. The tribes remaining out of this confederation call themselves Powhatans, they are the Mattaponi, Chickahominy, Pamunkey, Rappahannocks, then there are Upper Mattaponi, East Chickahominy, too who were part of the original 8!. Pocahontas' mother was Chickahominy!. The other tribes of Virginia were basically wiped out and ignored when the "racial purity" acts of the 1920's came into Virginia!. This did not occur in the Midwest or in other states, just in the South, particularly, Virginia!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
