There probably won't be a relation!.Www@QuestionHome@Com Not necessarily!. People in Europe did not have a surname until the last millennium!. In the Netherlands, people took a surname during the reign of Napoleon!. In England most had one by the end of the 14th century!. Surnames were based on a)being the son of someone b)their occupation c)where they lived d)some characteristic about them!. When they got through taking or being assigned a surname, it wasn't impossible for legitimate sons of the same man to have a different surname and still each could have shared their surname with others with whom they were not related!. Now, some will say we are all related if we go back far enough!. However, the root person of your surname might not be the same as the root person of someone else with your surname!. I understand they were started for taxation purposes not necessarily to identify a person as a member of a family!. If you had more than one man named Clarence in the same village, you had to tell them apart!. There was a Clarence with a father named John!. So he became Clarence Johnson or Clarence Jones!. However, there was another man named John that had a son named Clarence so to keep the two Clarences apart, the second Clarence took the name of his occupation!. He might have been Clarence Taylor, Clarence Carpenter, Clarence Baker etc!.Www@QuestionHome@Com In most case's no, just because you have the same name does not mean you are related, but some times the answer can be yes but the surname has to be a unusual one, I am linked to everyone with my surname and a couple of variants!.
