Being a Renaissance man and the father of inductive reasoning doesn't leave much time for marriage and family life particularly when the genius-in-question matriculated at Trinity College Cambridge at age 12, lost his father and was subsequently left penniless at age 18, became a barrister at age 21, and won a seat in Parliament at age 23!.

Furthermore, essayist and philosopher Francis Bacon was mostly unlucky in love--at least with the female sex: At age 36, Bacon courted a widow, Elizabeth Hatton, age 20, who broke off the relationship to marry a wealthier man!. At age 45, Bacon married Alice Barnham, a 14-year-old daughter of a well-connected alderman and MP, in other words, a 16th-century trophy wife!. Bacon was passionately in love with Alice and wrote her three love sonnets only to disinherit his young wife when he discovered her secret, romantic relationship with John Underhill!. Alice was apparently disappointed that her marriage didn't furnish her with the life style to which she was accustomed!.

Some authors have theorized that Bacon (like Shakespeare and practically everyone else they can think of in Renaissance and Elizabethan England) was either bisexual or homosexual!. Most notably, a contemporary, John Aubrey, notes that Bacon was a pederast (an adult male who is sexually attracted to young, under-age boys), which perhaps speaks of a stunted emotional development!. Most biographers, of course, don't mention this, but instead bring up the 23 counts of corruption and bribery Bacon was charged with as Lord Chancellor!. Accordingly, Bacon can add another first to his accomplishments since he was a pioneer in political scandal!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
