Question: About to trace my family tree, which is best for me!?
I was on Ancestry!.com some time back, and it didn't work too well because I had very little info about my family!.!.!.but now I have pages of names and dates, as a starting point, so I have plenty of info!.

So I'm looking for a solution where I can easily research my family history, but I really want to build a tree model as I go, maybe something I can print out, I want to have a full family tree and give it as a gift to some of the elders in my family!. And I would like to store my results electronically, in case I have to go back and change something!. Does anyone know of any good software, or sites that would help me!? Price is not a factor, so it doesn't have to be free!. Thanks!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I recommend RootsMagic for genealogy software!.I've used it for over 10 years!. It's about $40 but it has all the bells and whistles!. ANd they're releasing a new version early next year, so buying now gets you an automatic update!. (No, I don't get a commission!. It's just good stuff!.)

You can also get the free-when-you-register genealogy software called Personal Ancestral File (PAF) from Family Search!.

For sites, Cyndi's List is the megasite for genealogy links!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Don't expect to have it all by Christmas!.

There are lots of websites!. Cyndi'slist!.com is a website with links to many other websites, some free and some not free, which are helpful to genealogist!.

Most genealogy websites have family trees!. This is a warning I give to everyone!. Information in family trees on ANY website must be viewed as clues only, not as absolute fact!. The info is subscriber submitted and mostly not documented or poorly documented!. You will see different info on the same people from different subscribers!. Then you will see the absolute same info on the same people from different subscribers, BUT that is not proof it is correct!. A lot of people copy without verifying and as a results errors are being multiplied all over the internet!.

I just found out last night at looking at an online tree that my younger sister and I are deceased!.
Date was unkown but we died in New Jersey!. The only time either of us was in NJ was in the 1950s when we drove through it going to and coming from New York!. So apparently I have been dead for at least 50 years!.

I think Ancestry!.Com is the best for the amount of original source records online!. Not all records are online, but the ones they have will save you money traveling all over the country
to courthouses, state libraries etc!.

A good free source is a Family History Center at a Latter Day Saints(Mormon) Church!. They have records on people all over the world, not just Mormons!. In Salt Lake City, they have the world's largest genealogical collection!. Their FHCs can order microfilm for you to view at a nominal fee!.

I have never had them to try and convert me or send their missionaries by to ring my doorbell!. I haven't heard of them doing that to anyone else that has used their resources!. Just call the nearest Mormon Church or visit their free website, FamilySearch!.org, to obtain their hours for the general public!.
