When I visited one of my ancestral homes last year in Germany I felt very comfortable with the people there, and comfortable with the surroundings!. Remarkable, since our whole family was sent off to the states to get rid of them, as we were so poor and on the dole all the time!.

In my other main ancestral home, the British Isles, one line was a boy kidnapped from the Belfast docks into indentured servitude in the colonies; another line from Scotland were sent off to the States in the hopes that the man of the family would find honest work and would stop drinking so much!. Yet another line or two or three were lucky to leave before some of their Christian brothers in faith killed them for believing some awful hypocrisy that no one could remember after one generation!.

Almost without exception, people who came to the colonies did so because they were out of options on the continent (I'm only talking Europe here, of course)!. I'm not too sure how unhappy they were to go, and if my mixture of 8th and 9th and 10th generation genes would be able to differentiate one lousy hovel from another!.

That said, I'm from Illinois and I visit there every two years or so!. I never fail to be 'recharged' by the smell of the earth and air and the vistas of the prairies!.

Most of my ancestors came from the UK and Spain!. I've been to England and do sometimes wish I could live there!. But I also feel the same way about Canada (where I grew up) and Australia (where I visted a few times)!. I don't ever long to roam the Yorkshire moors (much of my family are Yorkshiremen), I frequently see things about small towns in England and think "just the name makes it sound dull!." So I think it's more of a "I could live in London and love it" rather than a longing to get back to my roots!.

I think it's important that you visit the country of your ancestors!. I have at least 10 generations of English ancestors, and I was born and raised in England!.

But I also have Belgian and Swiss ancestry!. I have been to both Belgium pretty much every year of my life, as my grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins live there!.

The only family we have left in Switzerland are my grandmother's siblings and their families, who I'm not familiar with!. They don't speak English, and my German is very basic, so we can't really communicate!. I've only been to the family home once, so I would love to go again, but it's finding the time and the money that's the hard part!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

I felt very much at home in England, almost like a genetic memory!. I hope to visit the Netherlands, and am studying the Dutch language in preparation!. I would consider moving there permanently only if they adopted the Bill of Rights!.

Most of my ancestors came to North America between 1610 and 1740---nearly all of them were avoiding religious wars or religious discrimination!. They founded towns and cities and settlements from New Amsterdam all the way to California!.

Judging from the current winter weather conditions in Wisconsin and Montana, there was a reason they moved here!.
