Question: How do I find information for my Indian ancestors!?
Unfortunately, my relatives that would have this information are deceased!. I have Souix ancestors but have absolutely no idea how to make the connection as to their positions in their tribe community!. I'm not going to spend money to have someone or a website give me my family history, so if you can help with a free method it would be greatly appreciated!. I would preferably like to track down this information using family names!. Thanks in advance!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

This may be different in the U!.S!., but it works here in Canada!. Our vital statitics dept!. of the Federal Gov't keeps all records of First Nations Peoples and the general population!. I'm not quite sure when they started to keep records!. Before that, Churches that were in your forefathers time kept records, ie, births, marriages, deaths!. That might be a place to start, only if they have names to work with though!. Churches would anglicize their native names!. I have seen their native names as well as their new name on documents!. ( I don't work for gov't!.) Go to the churches near where you think they lived at that time!.They will probably charge a small fee for their services!. This service would be invaluable to you at any costs!. Hope this helps, good luck!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Family names are not a reliable way to track ancestry!. Women usually take their husband's surname!. Surname spelling and first names were easily changed before the 1950s when government agencies began maintaining databases with people's personal information!.

You need to do basic genealogy!. There aren't any shortcuts to get what you want!. Cyndi's List has "How To" links that can get you started!. Work back through the generations going child-to-parent until you reach your Native American ancestor!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

First of all you might not want to insult Native Americans by calling them Indians (the term was coined by Christopher CoDUMBus when he thought he had found a new way to India!. So people from India are Indians, people from North America are called Native Amercians and the rest of the people who live here are called invaders) I will step off of my saop box now!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
