Helen Hunt Jackson first popularized the name "Ramona" in her novel chronicling the adventures of a Scottish-Native American orphan, by the same name, who grew up in Southern California in the 19th century (1884)!. Once an extremely popular novel, "Ramona" was first serialized in the "Christian Union", later went through 300 printings, and was depicted in four films as well as an outdoor play!. Hunt wanted "Ramona" to do for the American Indians what Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin" did for African-Americans slaves, but she over-sentimentalized her characters and perhaps subconsciously injected a lot of subtle racism in her depiction of Mexican and Indian characters!. The novel has never gone out-of-print, but at least in its original form probably would appeal more to an 19th- or early 20th-century audience!.

Children's author, Beverly Cleary, also has given the heroine of her works the name of "Ramona Quimby" while Bob Dylan has further immortalized the name in "To Ramona"!. All of which makes Ramona a stereotypical plucky California girl!.
