http://www!.familysearch!.org is a free site and is a great place for a beginner to learn a few genealogy basics!.
Simply register and follow the easy instructions!.

http://www!.rootsweb!.com is a free Q&A forum, owned by ancestry!.com

http://www!.ancestry!.com offers a free 14 day trial period!. After that there is a charge!.
If you choose to take advantage of the trial, download (backup) your tree on a CD in GEDCOM format, before the trial period ends!.
The instructions for this are in ancesrty's Help section!.
GEDCOM format can be used with most of the popular genealogy programs and sites, including familysearch!.com!.
ancestry!.com is relatively inexpensive, about $160!.00 annually!.

Most public libraries subscribe to a genealogy site and only require the user to have a library card!. You may be restricted as to the length of time you are allowed to be on a computer!.
There will be a charge for copying documents!.

The Mormon Church also has a terrific genealogy library, which is free to the public, regardless of the persons religious affiliation!. They do limit your time on the computor, if they have people waiting!.
There will be a charge fro copying documents!.

I prefer to subscribe to a paid site, because I can research any time of the day or night in the comfort of my home!.
I can also print any documents, pertaining to my ancestors; Census, birth, death, marriage, military records, to name a few!. And, I can compare my information to information on other subscribers trees!.

At some point in your search for infomation about your ancestors, you will have to pay for it, especially if you want certified copies of documents!.
