Family trees are an ongoing, never-ending project, so nobody's finished theirs, but I've certainly started mine!.

* I would say you need to map out what you DO know before you start!. Then ask your parents and grandparents (if they are still alive) what they know!. You'll be amazed at what you can find out!.

* Have an open mind!. Don't close yourself off to foreigners or criminals in your tree, because it's part of who you are!. My grandmother is waiting for me to find the "money" in the family, but so far there's nothing more than labourers!. Consider the family tales you've heard, but be prepared for the fact that they might not be true!.

* Backup your findings with additional sources!. For example, if you find a marriage record online, order the marriage certificate to be double sure you've got the right people!.

* Write EVERYTHING down!. Add everything to your family tree, but write your explanations down in a book!. I bought a spiralbound notebook especially for my research, and I've explained everything in idiot-proof language!. That way, you can pass it down to your children and grandchildren, and they'll be able to pick up where you left off!.

* Never assume a relationship; it's the worst mistake you can make!. I assumed a relationship, and subsequently spent 6 months tracing the wrong line!.

* Never take other peoples' information for gospel!. I have found plenty of people online with common ancestors, but they've spelled the names wrong, they have the wrong birth details, the wrong spouses!.!.!. one of them even had my grandfather's details wrong; and I would know!

* If you get stuck on one line, leave it, and trace another!. FOr every marriage, there is another line to follow, and I've currently got over 400 lines in progress, that I can pick up at any time!. When you come back to the line you were stuck on, with fresh eyes, you may break down that brick wall in one simple move!. I've done it plenty of timesWww@QuestionHome@Com

Yes I have made a tree, You need to work back from what you know!. Talk to family members Parents Grandparents, Aunts & Uncle's etc, Gather any printed matter you can lay your hands on Certificates of Birth, Death and Marriage, Letters Diary's and any military papers!.

Draw out a rough tree, if you are lucky you might have a Family Bible in which family details have been recorded!.
