Question: Confused somewhat while searching my family tree!?
Hi all -

I'm confused, while at the cemetary researching my family history, I came across this stone (yes brittain's are in my family) but i'm not sure what to do with the information now that I have it!. This is what the stone says :

Jame A!. Brittan
July 16, 1882- June 2, 1900
William J!. Brittan
Nov!. 24, 1866- Feb!. 16,1930
Ida A!. - His wife
Aug!. 25, 1858- May 19, 1953
Gertrude A!. Henderson
May 14, 1884-Oct!. 29 1948

My question is :: Who was Ida married to and who is Gertrude!?

I have looked on rootsweb , no luck and i don't have an ancestory account (had to cancel, funds are tight)!.

any help would be appreicated, so i know where to put these people

also does this mean that william and james are brothers!? or is one the dad and one the son!?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Ida was married to William J!. Brittan and had two children
the first one died before his parents (18 yr!. old) in 1900 and this was James!.
Gertrude was a daughter that probably was added to the family plot and grave stone later!.!.!. (Henderson being her married name!.)

The Family Headstone was probably bought when the 18 year old son died!.
2 entries were left "blank" for the parents, since it is customary to add their entries following each other!.

The first entry was the 18 year old son, James
then William, his father who died in 1930
Ida's was left blank underneath him and was added after
the daughter died in 1948!.

I am just looking at the birth dates:
James was born in 1882
Gertrude was born in 1884
There is a strong possibility that they were siblings!.
and that Gertrude was added with her married name instead of her maiden name Brittan!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Ida A!. should be the wife of William J!. Brittan as her names follows his on the stone!.

Gertrude could have been a sister!. There is more information that is needed to figure out the correct answers to your question!.
You might try looking for death certificates on them all!.

I agree with Mistress Boleyn, but the best way to find out is to locate records that show their relationships (the Census is usually a good way to prove relationships and determine whether the theory can be confirmed)!.

Where did they live (or where are they buried)!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

I would say most likely that James and William are brothers!. There's a sixteen year age difference between the two, and while that's a huge gap for brothers, it's also a small gap for parenting!. (It was generally girls who married young, and their husbands were much older)!.

My next guess would be that Ida was married to William, as it appears that her headstone lies next to or below his!. Gertrude could then be their daughter, James' niece (if my assumptions are correct)!. Gertrude would very likely be buried in her own family's plot, as she is technically, first, the "property" of her father!.

I hope this helps a little!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
