Rootsweb, FamilySearch!.org are two good free sites!. Another site Cyndi'sList!.Com has links to a multitude of other websites, some free, some not, that are very helpful in genealgoy!.

Now you have to distinguish between original source records and subscriber submitted family trees!. Information in family trees on ANY website, free or not free, must be viewed with caution!. They are submitted by folks like you and me!. They are mostly not documented or poorly documented!. You might see different info on the same people form different subscribers!. Then you will see the same info on the same people from different subscribers, BUT that is no guarantee at all it is correct!. A lot of people copy without verifying!.!. The information can be usedful as CLUES as to where to get the documentation!. also some provide you with the email address of the submitter!. Some subscribers will be happy to answer questions and some you will never hear from!.

Another good free source is a Family History Center at a Latter Day Saints(Mormon) Church!.
They have records on people all over the world, not just Mormons!. In Salt Lake City, they have the world's largest genealogical collection!. Their Family History Centers can order microfilm for you at a nominal fee!. Just call the nearest Mormon Church or visit their free website, FamilySearch!.org to get their hours for the general public!.

I have never had them to try and convert me or send their missionaries by to ring my doorbell!. I haven't heard of them doing that to anyone else that has used their resources!. They are very nice and helpful!.

But your best free source can be your own family!. Get as much info from them as possible, particularly your senior members!. Tape them if they will let you!. They probably will be confused on some things but what might seem to be insignificant story telling you wouldn't write down might turn out to be very significant!.

Ask if any family has any on family bibles!. Ask to see and make copies of birth, marriage and death certificates!. Depending on the religious faith baptismal, first communion, confirmation and marriage certificates can yield valuable information!.

You also should check out your public library to find out what all they have in genealogy!. They might have a subscription to Ancestry!.Com you can use!. Ancestry!.Com, I believe, has the most records on line of any website!. They have all the U!.S!. censuses through 1930!. The 1940 and later are not available to the public yet!. They have U!.K!. censuses through 1901!. They have military, immigration, land and other records and indexes to vital records of many states!. Now, not all records are online, but the ones they have will save you traveling, gasoline and motel expense to go to courthouses, libraries etc!.

Still be cautious of their family trees!. There might be some errors in their transcription of censuses and other records but you can view the original image and when you do you will have pity on the transcribers!. They are looking many times at handwriting that is hard to read and some pages are very lightly written and don't stand out very well!.
