Question: Anyone with the surname Wilolen!? Did the name originate in the Netherlands or Norway!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
The name has evolved since leaving its homeland!. I can't find that exact spelling in databases from either country!. Here are the names in the vacinity that I could find:

Wilolin - Russia
Wilolim - came from Ireland in 1855
Wilolstein - came from Austria in 1913
Witolin - many from Russia between 1907-1921
Walulin - Jew from Odesia in 1905

Here's access to Genlias, which is the government sponsored Dutch genealogy website: http://www!.genlias!.nl/en/searchResults!.j!.!.!.
There's nothing on there!.

None of the Scandinavian services that I have access to shows anything except a few Russians with similar names on the passenger lists!.

I hope it helps, but my guess is you're either looking in Russia or Austria-Hungary for the roots of this family!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The name does not show up in either rootsweb or familysearch!.org!.

It is a misconception to think that a name ALWAYS has one certain origin!. Work with the ancestor!.!. not the name!. For example!.!. it is completely conceivable that an ancestor with the name was born in the Netherlands!.!. while his grandfather was born in Norway (or vice versa)!. If the name appeared in both places, it still then is necessary to find if YOUR ancestor was actually born in either place!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Don't assume that the spelling you have now is the correct spelling!.
In many cases migrants had limited spelling skills and therefore allowed officials to spell their names on their behalf to the best of their knowledge, using phonetic spelling!.
Sometimes migrants changed their names/ albeit Anglicising their names to fit in to a new society!.
Think outside of the square, perhaps the W was a V or the O and i!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
