Question: Slavery family names remembered!?
Has any African-Americans ever known their original African names passed down the family from the older folks!. Or, did they not have last names just clan name!? I am helping an African-American child do a report!. Appreciate any help!. TYWww@QuestionHome@Com

Most likely they didn't have a family name!. And if they did, it was not passed on since they were illiterate!.

That's an interesting question! I don't know the answer, but I recently learned something interesting about slaves and surnames!. I'd always thought that slaves only had a first name, and didn't start using surnames until after emancipation!. But apparently many slaves did use surnames!.!.!. and not always the name of their slaveowner!. For instance, a slave owned by a Smith family may have called himself Tom Mitchell, because his grandfather had been owned by a Mitchell family and they'd carried the name down!. I might be the only person who didn't know that!.!.!. but I found it interesting!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

well most african americans didn't even have a last name but if they did it was never passed on to through the generations because the african americans couldn't remember their last name

I think their original names were of the form "Michael, son of Paul", but in their languages!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
