Only by researching it!. I don't think you are going to be able to get your father's birth certificate if he is still living!. That would be considered an invasion of privacy!.

His birth record might be in some of the indexes Ancestry!.Com has and might not!. If you do not wish to subscribe to Ancestry!.Com, your public library might have a subscription to it!.

Do you know your grandparents' names!? Your parents' application for a marriage license might have their parents' names!. That might be a the courthouse of the county where they were married!. Then if you could obtain death certificates on grandparents, if they are deceased, that would be a big start!.

Some will suggest a DNA test!. There are 3 types of DNA, Autosomal, Y & Mitochondrial!.
You get Autosomal 50-50 from both parents coming down from all your ancestors!. Y is passed on from father to son only!. Mitochondrial is passed from mother to both sons and daughters but only the daughters pass it on to their children!.

Y & Mitochondrial are only used by most Genealogy DNA companies as they go back in a straight line virtually unchanged!. Since you are a female you are not eligible for the Y DNA!. They are very valuable for matching people to other family trees!.

DNA Tribes is the only company that I know of using Autosomal for ethnicity type testing!.

Autosomal DNA is the only DNA that relates a female to her father or anyone to their ancestors who were the spouses of their direct Y & Mitochondrial line!. So even if you were male and could get both Y & Mitochondrial tested, it would leave out a lot of your ancestors!.

The total number of people you descend from pyramids as you go back!. If you get back to your 6xgreat grandparents(that is 9 generations including yourself), barring any duplicates, you are directly descended from 510 individuals!. Of those 510 individuals, you get your Mitochondrial DNA from only 8 leaving out 502 people!. In addition if you were a male, you would get your Y DNA from only 8 and the two together would leave out 494 people!.

You might check out the DNA tribes website!. There is a way you can email them and find out more information!. I don't know how specific or how accurate the testing is!.

Many other companies are working to use Autosomal but it is far more complicated!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I don't think it's super dumb! Get his name from your mother and go from there!. You can find out a lot of info!. on line just from a name!. Try ancestry!.com, rootsweb, etc!. It's a good thing to know especially for future reference as far as health, genetics and so forth!. Hope I helped!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well you could find his birth certificate from the government and this would give you his parents names!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
