Position:Home>Genealogy> Can a DNA test tell me what countries my ancestors came from?

Question: Can a DNA test tell me what countries my ancestors came from!?
I'm fairly certain I've researched 3/4 of my family tree!. Seeing as how my grandmother was adopted, I do not know her heritage!. I'm getting past the point of hoping for name verifications to actually trace her parents, grandparents, etc!. The details seem to have been lost to history!.

I've considered a DNA test (probably from Family Tree DNA) to try to figure where my grandmother's ancestors came from/lived in Europe!. This is my dad's mother, for what it's worth!. I know that I have German, French, and Luxembourger roots for sure!. Anything else is speculation!. I feel I've done a reasonable job figuring out that 3/4 of my family tree came to the US from those 3 countries!. Anything else is speculation from family members!.

Are there any DNA tests that will show results that say my roots are German, French, Luxembourger, and (insert other countries here)!? I'm hoping that if a country shows up that I wasn't expecting, I might be able to say it's possible/probable my grandmother was of that ethnicity!.

I've done some reading on DNA tests, but I'm a bit confused as to whether or not it will list countries like this or even which test to order!. Please help!

Thank you!Www@QuestionHome@Com

From personal knowledge:
If you are a male you can go from mother to her mother to her mother or from your father to his father, etc!.
Taking the test will show where your surname originated from or where your mother's line originated from but not each place inbetween!.

So to find your grandmother's origin and possibly a match in the DNA database you need to have either her daughter or her son take the test, that way it goes from them to her to her mother, etc!.

Men can take the MTDNA test, for female line, or the Y-DNA test for the male line!. Females can only do the female line!.

I had my MTDNA done and I'm from one of the 7 daughters of Eve and I got a map which shows where my line migrated to!. If I find an exact match then we have a job in trying to find who our common grandmother was!.
My husband did his Y-DNA and he matched several other lines and it told us he came from Ireland!. Now we have to connect the dots and find the common ancestor between the other lines!. I was stuck in 1870 on a grandfather!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Before you shell out a whack of cash, DNA testing cannot tell what country you're from, it can however tell you within reason the general region and race your genetics comprise of!.
A typical Northern European would be 90% Indo European, 5% Sub Saharan, 5% Asian!.

Yes it can! I got this answer from google:

Ethnicity Testing
Are you adopted and curious about your heritage!?
Are you predominantly African and curious about other ancestry you may have!?
Do you want to expand and confirm your family's genealogical studies!?
Uncover Your Personal Anthropology!

The AncestryByDNA provides you with a simple and objective description of your ancestral origins!. The ethnicity test gives you an estimated percentage of ancestry from the four major historical population groups:

European: Europeans, Middle Easterners and South Asians from the Indian subcontinent including India , Pakistan and Sri Lanka!.
East Asian: Japanese, Chinese, Mongolian, Koreans, Southeast Asians and Pacific Islanders including peoples native to the Philippines!.
African: Peoples from Sub-Saharan Africa such as Nigeria and Congo region!.
"BioGeographical Ancestry admixture" is the heritable component of what we commonly refer to as "race", and AncestryByDNA is a genome-based ethnicity test for determining your BioGeographical Ancestry admixture percentages!. The test is the first of its kind ever developed!. It reports proportional European, Western sub-Saharan African (African) and East Asian ancestry!. For example, one person may obtain a result of 80% European 20% East Asian, while another may type as 33% African, 22% East Asian and 22% European!.

Customers recieve their raw genetic data, a bar graph showing the percentages of each group and a specialized representation of their data called a triangle plot, along with a users manual!. Ancestry cannot be determined by any genetics test in a black/white litmus test fashion!. Instead, the results are reported as statistical estimates, and are qualified with confidence intervals!. From over 6,000 tests so far performed, and extensive mathematical simulation, we know that the test is accurate to from 4-8% and sensitive enough to detect, for many customers, a single (100%) African or European great great grandparent, or a single (100%) East Asian great grandparent!. Most customers use the test in an attempt to confirm recent admixture events such as this - where the family tree is primarily European for instance but one or more recent ancestors are of other ancestry, East Asian!.

The main difference between this test, called an autosomal test, and other genetic tests such as Y-chromosome or mitochondrial (mtDNA) tests is that it surveys across all 23 chromosome pairs, not just one of them!. By analogy, AncestryByDNA allows one to read all 23 chapters of their DNA book when inferring their ancestry, not just one of those chapters!.

Further information

To determine the percentage of DNA a person has from each of these four groups, the test examines 175 Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs)!. These 175 SNPs have been selected based on their bio-geographic polymorphism patterns , and are referred to as Ancestry Informative Markers (AIMs)!. The alleles found at these marker locations show very high specificity for people from particular populations, ethnicity and/or geographical regions!. AncestryByDNA can be used to resolve the following four groups:

European: Europeans, Middle Easterners and South Asians from the Indian subcontinent including India , Pakistan and Sri Lanka !.
East Asian: Japanese, Chinese, Mongolian, Koreans, Southeast Asians and Pacific Islanders including peoples native to the Philippines !.
African: Peoples from Sub-Saharan Africa such as Nigeria and Congo region!.

The Euro-DNA 1!.0 Product Upgrade:

An ethnicity test to further resolve ones ancestral origin beyond what the AncestryByDNA product does is called the Euro-DNA 1!.0!. This test is used to further resolve the intra-continental ancestral composition for the European group!. To do this, the test examines 320 SNP markers (this is including the 175 AncestryByDNA markers) to look deeper within the following European lineages:

Northern European subgroup (NOR)
Southeastern European ( Mediterranean ) subgroup (MED)
Middle Eastern subgroup (MIDEAS)
South Asian subgroup (SA)

The Euro-DNA test is only available to participants that test >50% positive for European ancestry using the AncestryByDNA product (then they can purchase the Euro-DNA Upgrade), or if they believe that they have >50% European ancestry and have not yet been tested using the AncestryByDNA product (then they can purchase the Euro-DNA 1!.0)!.
