But I read an autobiography or biography about her years ago, and I'd swear I remember her saying she took the name as a way of showing that anyone had the right to be anyone, meaning that she, an African-American woman, could take on a Jewish identity if she wanted to!. She did several things on this theme, acting in some roles that were traditionally white and/or traditionally male!.
