Casey, there are THOUSANDS of genealogy sites, and I don't know of any that are not legal!.
To explain!.!. a genealogy site and a family tree site are not the same thing!. Sites that have "family trees" are places where someone has uploaded THEIR research!. What happens is that most people hope for easy!.!. like type in your name and there are your ancestors!.
No!. Does not work that way!.
Reason one- LIVING PEOPLE are not normally posted online!. You (your mother, your grandmother, so forth) who are alive also are at risk for identity theft!. Good researchers don't want that for you!. You MUST start research with private records!. your birth certificate, mom's marriage record, grandma's birth certificate!. YOU can access that!.!. we cannot, and should not!.

Here is a site to help you GET STARTED!. It explains how to find the info!. With a silly pun!.!. you probably can't see the forest for the trees!. Meaning- research is finding puzzle pieces, and the pieces become your tree!. Or, compare McDonalds to a home cooked meal!. McDonalds will feed you a crappy meal, and charge you!. If you buy the ingredients and put it together, it is cheaper and healthier!.
The whole scene changes, once you get back a few generations, and now you are looking for your gr gr grandparents!. Count it back!.!. 2 parents, 4 grandparents, 8 greats!.!. 16 gr gr grandparents!. EACH of them will be their own person and their own ancestry!. You might find them online!. They are dead, and no one is going to steal their info!. Or!.!. if no one has posted their ancestry, you find it!. Instead of the ancestry of Jane Smith, you look for her marriage record to John Jones!. The cemetery where she is buried (with her birth date hopefully on the stone)!. Or, where is she in the 1870 census!? (living with her parents and siblings)!.

Cyndi collects genealogy sites!.!. not family trees!. So, when you learn that John's parents were Quakers, you check cyndi's for Quaker research!. Or Portugal!. Or Civil War!.
The ones you are now thinking of!.!. are sites for LIVE people!. And yes, that information is often confidential (and what isn't, you have to pay for)!. Gentle hint- Genealogy isn't free!. It will have some costs!.!.the trick is how to get around that!. Example!.!. it will cost to buy a death certificate, since it is a govt record!. But, if you know the cemetery or funeral home, that will often have the info you need!. Or, the obituary!.

Why do you think YOUR family tree would be online!? Unless you have some great-aunt or distant cousin who has done the research AND posted it online, your tree will not be there!. The government or any other company or individual does not go around collecting this info and generate family trees out there for everyone ever born!. All the family trees online are generated by the individual who is researching their own tree and posted it!. If you want your tree online, you have to create it!. By using some of the popular genealogy sites, you might get lucky that some stuff will be there, but only if someone else's family tree crosses paths with yours and they posted it!. Your question makes it sound way too easy, and it just doesn't work that way!.

And, do not use oneworldtree as someone suggested!. I have never seen anything more full of errors than that one!.

There are many sites with family trees but whether yours would be on there is if someone in your family has submitted the family tree!.

The trees are subscriber submitted(folks like you and me) not by some experts working for the websites!. There are errors!. You might see different info on the same people from different subscribers!. Then you will see repeatedly the same info on the same people from different subscribers but that is no guarantee at all it is correct!. A lot of people copy without verifying!. You can make up a tree and submit it to one of those websites and it will be accepted!. There is absolutely no way the owners of the websites can check all the information and verify it is correct!.

I like Ancestry!.Com for its records!. It isn't free but someone posted one day that they will populate your family tree for you!. What is being done their computer system is set up to take info from trees other subscribers have submitted and provide you with the information!.
When you start copying other subscriber's information, you will probably wind up with some junk!. The trees are very seldom documented or poorly documented!. You should always look for documentation in online family trees or in books!.
Your public library might have a subscription to Ancestry!.Com you can use for free!.

Rootsweb and FamilySearch!.org are 2 good free sites but still info in family trees should be verified!.

You can try oneworldtree!. You may get lucky and find someone on it!. But for someone to have uplaoded anythign there, they do not have to prove it so don;t put too much faith in it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
