The saddest story about dying without a funeral was when James Jordan, father of basketball legend Michael Jordan, was killed in his car in North Carolina and his body was taken across the state line into South Carolina and dumped in a swamp!. When his body was discovered and no one claimed it (because no one thought to tie the disappearance of Jordan Sr to a body in SC), the county went ahead and had him cremated three days after he was found!. When authorities finally linked the Jordan disappearance to the body found in the swamp, the family had no chance for a formal goodbye!. They could remember him as he was and come together for that!. But they were still handed a plastic bag inside a cardboard box and they had no choice on how his goodbye would be!.

If a body doesn't get claimed, it is either cremated or buried in a pauper's grave!. If the family wants to do something, but can't afford it, there are some social service programs that will cover basic expenses!. Some people have better fates than others!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

My grandmother didn't want a funeral so my aunt buried her ashes under a tree by herself!. It really bothered me because I hadn't realized the family gathering we had shortly after her death was going to be the whole deal, and I left early to go out with my friends!. Not because I didn't care but to take my mind off her death, I guess!. So now I know why funerals are so important!. They aren't for the dead person but for the living to give them a chance to say goodbye properly!.

To answer your question about money though, I think if no one can pay for it the government pays for the burial, but it will be very basic!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

A former Senator donated his body to science!. More and more people are going for simple solutions to funerals!. Funerals have become a pomp!.
In these days, people not only pay on time for their homes and cars and food, they now are making payments for funerals!. Many people are being buried in coffins more expensive than any piece of furniture they ever owned!. Does not make sense!.
I have family all over the world!. I cannot visit the graves of the ones who passed!. That is o!.k!. I think about them very often and periodically
make donations in their name!. They live on in my heart!.

I am sure that Funeral Homes have information regarding Charities which help in cases were there are no funds for a funeral!.

Yes, my best friend and roommate died without having a funeral!. He did not have any family or money so he is buried in the indigent cemetery and either the state or the city paid to bury him!. I was unable to find out any information on anything because I was not his family!. So I guess I will never have closure on this!. I have nowhere to visit his grave and mourn!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

UK answer!.
Yes it happens too often sadly!. Here in Nottingham we have a thing called the City Funeral, if a person has died and has no money or relatives, then the City Council take over the arrangements and normally the cremation!. If they are buried then they go into what is now known as a *Common Grave*, (was a paupers grave)!. A common grave means that you cannot put a headstone or a kerb on the grave to mark it, you cant mark it in any way!.
Hope this helps!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I discovered that my grandfather had died in hospital and his body hadn't been claimed, so the hospital buried him in a mass, unmarked grave!.
