Scots and Irish are from the same Celtic ethnic stock and the Irish and Scots Gaelic are mutually understandable !. The ancient Scottish game of shinty is similar to Irish hurly and indeed Scotland play Ireland in an adaption of the two games each year !. Scots of Irish extraction are scattered throughout Scotland !.The large immigration of Irish and and indeed Scots Highlanders to Glasgow and the West of Scotland during the 1840 potato famine caused social problems regarding employment and housing The somewhat introverted presbyterian etrhos kicked in giving rise to the religious tensions that prevailed right through to the late 20th century !. Fortunately and thankfully this seems to have diminished and the bigotry that was found in the west of Scotland of old is dying out !. Www@QuestionHome@Com

From just reading Scottish newspapers like Edinburgh's The Scotsman, I occasionally find some discrimination (both real and imagined) against Roman Catholics, but not against immigrants from Southern Ireland per say!.

Some Scots and Irish simply deal with this discrepancy by marrying each other!. For example, Sean Connery's dad was of Roman Catholic Irish ancestry from County Wexford while his mum was a Lowland Scot!. Comedian Billy Connolly is also a Scot whose dad's ancestry is Irish!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
