The local library is a good start!.
Family members may have some records!. Perhaps, a cousin, aunt or uncle has do the work and is willing to share!.

But, if you're looking for a magic free site, containing records on your family members, you will not find one!.

familysearch!.org is a free site, which will help you get thru the basics!.
They have a few free printable forms and the site is very easy to use!. You have to supply a CD, for recording your findings, as they do not offer on-line storage!.
As with any electronic files, I strongly advise backing up any and all of your research!.
And, a paper copy can be very helpful, in case your electronic files are damaged or lost!.

Genealogy is only free to a point!.
Then, in order to verify your findings, you have to be prepared to pay for it!.

Traveling to collect info can be a lot more expensive than a subscription to a genealogy site!.
My subscription to ancestry!.com allows me to research from the comfort of my home!.
I can stay up as late as I desire, without being told "the library is closing"!.
Access to Census Records, military, birth and death records, etc!., is worth the price of the subscription!. And, I can print anything I need for future referrence!.

Genealogy is not a hobby!.
It's an obsession!.

Bottom line, it's up to you and how serious you are about doing the work in order to find the info!.

Records will normally be where the person lived, AND died!. So, her death certificate should be where that happened, as well as obit, etc!. If she lived in the US prior to 1930, she should be in the census at that time!. Social security application!? depends on if she had one (your grandma could be born in 1930, mine was born in the 1800s!.!. you HAVE to be explicit, for each and every item)!.
Not to insult you!.!. but, if you intend to do research!.!. count your blessings for free records!.!. but DON'T expect them!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
