In the USA, you start at the Probate Court in the county he lived in when he died!. That will usually be the county he died in, unless he was eaten by a shark while on vacation in Hawaii or died in the muddy trenches in France in 1918!. (Or, more commonly, spent the last month or two in a hospital / rest home in a strange city!.) Costs vary by state and county!.

If you go back far enough, the Mormons have some will books for some counties on microfilm!. So do some state libraries!. You could Google "Monroe County {State} Will Index" to see, or search the LDS Family History Library catalog at their web site!. If the FHL has it you can borrow the microfilm for a nominal fee, and read it at your local FHC!.

Unless you put it in your question, we can't tell what country you are in!. It is the most frustrating thing Yahoo does!. It doesn't matter if you go into domestic (USA) Yahoo, Yahoo UK, Yahoo Australia, Yahoo India, etc!., all of the questions in English go into one big "pot"!.

You now have one answer from the US and one from the UK, as well as a couple from Planet Stupid!. If you ask another question here in Genealogy, please mention a country!. It will keep one set of us - either the Brits or the Yanks - from wasting our time!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Wills are filed with the probate court that has jurisdiction!. You'll need t know where and when your GGGGrandfather died to determine that!.

Unless lost in a fire or war or something, those things should remain on file forever!. The procedure and costs for getting a copy will vary from court to court!.

Your local library should have books like The Genealogist's Sourcebook that list names and addresses of courts around the world!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you are in the UK you can do a search online at The National Archives (TNA)

If it was a legal will that went through probate court the county that handled it will have a record in the courthouse!. I don't know about any fees!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

All wills are registered and are available to be viewed at the probate and registry office in London Www@QuestionHome@Com
