Question: What should I do to preserve my antique family Bible!?
I recently inherited a family Bible that is over 150 years old!. It is falling apart and I want to do as much as I can to preserve it so it doesn't get in any worse condition!. What are some things I should do to save it!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
We purchased an archival box with archival tissue paper, and stored my in-laws' family Bibles in it, in a closet away from moisture and extreme temperatures!. (We got those acid-free supplies at The Container Store, but many places carry them!.) This won't ever made the Bibles look any BETTER, but they should maintain their current condition for many, many years!.

"Unbuffered, acid-free tissue paper should be used for storing heirloom garments and fibers, just the same way acid-free photo albums protect your keepsake pictures from color change and decay!. From the review on Cool Tools:
For years I've been relying on inexpensive, unbuffered acid-free tissue paper to ensure some dear family heirlooms will remain in tact for years to come, including a piece of beaded silk from my step-grandmother's dance costume from the '20s!. Regular tissue paper is acidic and will yellow over time and damage fragile fabrics, especially silk!. Unbuffered, acid-free tissue paper is completely PH neutral!."

If you want to restore it to a better condition than it's in today, there are several professional services that restore antique Bibles and other books, this is one example: http://www!.leonardsbooks!.com/family_bibl!.!.!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

CAREFULLY check to see if there is any information written in it, like family tree type info, and copy it if possible!. Then do what the first responder recommended!. also, you could contact a local historical archive facility to speak to someone who is experienced in preserving old, valuable documents for recommendations!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If money is not an issue you can contact a book restorer and see if they can recommend something!. Otherwise you can get a shadowbox that has UV protected glass!. This will protect it from UV rays and dust!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
