Yes, a large percentage of African Americans also have European ancestry, although the estimates of the percentages of blacks with white ancestry vary from between 17 to 18 percent to 30 percent!. If an African American has 17 to 18 percent European ancestry, that's equivalent to having 106 out of 128 ancestors with African ancestry and 22 with European ancestry seven generations back in time!. That long ago, your white ancestors would probably be males rather than females!. For example, I'm sure you've heard about Thomas Jefferson fathering several children by his slave mistress, Sally Hemings!.

Of course, the only way to determine this would be through DNA testing!. Browse through the following web links and decide if you would like to splurge on such a test:

The USA Today article below also has hyperlinks to DNA testing sites!.

Of course, the percentage of European ancestry your dad has depends in part on what section of the country where your family lives now and where it has lived in the past!.

P!. S!. Thanks for the added information!. Actually, the same argument still stands!. Several generations ago or more you may have had European forebearers, but the only way for you to know your percentage mixture of both African and European ancestry is to have your DNA tested!. This, of course, won't change who you are--a London-born Brit of predominantly sub-Saharan African descent--but it will be an interesting piece of information to pass on to your children!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Black people have lived in Britain for centuries – from at least the 12th century!. Throughout history their circumstances have varied greatly, many were enslaved and exploited, while others enjoyed privilege and status!.

Records show that black men and women have lived in Britain in small numbers since at least the twelfth century, but it was the Empire that caused their numbers to swell exponentially in the 17th and 18th centuries!.

People of African and Asian origin have lived in Britain for at least two millennia!. They arrived here many hundreds of years before the massive forced migrations sparked by the slave trade and the British colonisation of India!. And by the time the SS Windrush arrived in 1948, famously carrying the first postwar arrivals from the Caribbean, Britain had a firmly established Black and Asian population!.
