The above answer has correct info from the 1870-1880 census, but is way off with the NY info!. Greenwich Village is, of course, in Manhattan (New York County), not Washington County!. There are no existing birth records for NYC back that far, but once in a while you can find a baptismal record!.
Your best bet is to work backwards from her death certificate!. If she died in 1890 in Chicago, those certificates are available!. A quick look at Cook County death records didn't turn up anyone with that name in 1890, but there was a "Mare J Ashton" who died in Cook County on Dec!. 8, 1891, although she is listed as having been 40 years old (ages on old death records, however, are rarely to be trusted)!. An 1828-born "Mary Ashton" died in Cook Co!. on Oct!. 24, 1907!.

You can connect with those records by contacting:

Agreed -- I'm not finding much on Ancestry's site!. This could be a possible match:
Illinois State Census Collection, 1825-1865
about Jno Ashfield
Name: Jno Ashfield
Census Date: 3 Jul 1865
Residence State: Illinois
Residence County: Cook
Residence Township: Chicago
Roll: ILSC_2172
Line: 17

There were several people in the home, unfortunately it doesn't list any names, just gender and age range!. 3 Boys 10 and under, 1 boy > 10, male and female 30-40!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
