Looking at actual persons in ancestry!.com, I see a large number with the name in NY, but more important!.!. in 1880, it also provides the place of birth for parents of the person!. So!.!. someone with the name who was born in NY in the 1830s, and says the parent also WAS born in NY, means the name was here before the first census in 1790!. It was not until 1850 that any place of birth is even shown!.
While I DO see most from NY, I also found at least one from Ireland!. What that does, is confirm that a person with that name, isn't limited to one single point of origin!.
This is probably the one single most often point!.!. that people assume names are ALWAYS of a single origin!. That is not always true, in fact, it OFTEN is not true!. It *could* be accurate that it is a German derived name, but that won't prove your ancestry is from Germany!. Your relatives may come from an adjoining East Europe country!.
Cross checking with www!.familysearch!.org gives more info!.!. it shows the name also is found in Swiss records!.!.AND England!. It is possible your family had an alternate spelling, too, such as Ambler!.
Bottom line!.!. except with some few unique names!.!. you CANNOT assume that your name is only one thing!. What you can verify is your immigrant ancestor, and his/her place of birth!. If you assume it is ONLY German, and thus claim German ancestry, you can be setting yourself up for a red face down the line!.
