Question: Need to search U!.S!. 1940 census records, where can I find it for Maryland!?
I read somewhere that the 1940 census is not going to be released until 2012!? Why hasn't it been released already, and also the 1950 and 1960!? Is there a privacy violatiion thing involved!? Ancestry!.com has 1930 and the years prior!. Is there somewhere else I can have access to it!?
thanksWww@QuestionHome@Com

There won't be anywhere you can find it until (April, I think) 2012!. They keep a tight lid on the records until it's time to release them!. It will be even longer until you can get the 1950 and 1960 census records!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Federal Census from 1940 - Present
According to the National Archives and Records Administration the 1940 and later censuses are not available to the public use due to a statutory 72-year restriction on access for privacy reasons!. (92 Stat!. 915; Public Law 95-416; October 5, 1978)!.

To make application (named person, family or legal representatives only) for this restricted information, visit the United States Census Bureau "age search" service where they will "search the confidential records from the Federal population censuses of 1940 to 1990 and issue an official transcript of the results (for a congressionally mandated fee)!."Www@QuestionHome@Com

They release the records 70 years after they were created!. 1930's census was released in 2000 but wasn't fully transcribed until late 2001 early 2002!. 2010 is when they will release them but 2011-12 will be when you can view them online!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
