Please do not think of research/ genealogy in terms of a surname!. Persons with the last name of Garrett are not all going to be related, so there is no way there is a "Garrett family history"!. If the name Garrett comes from <fill in the blank>, it does not make you (Irish, German, etc)!. Your heritage is about your individual ancestors!.
Tracing your history starts with you, and works back!. You verify who you are; who your parents are, then grandparents, and so on!. Of your 4 grandparents!.!. only one is named Garrett (women use their maiden/ family name to find their parents)!. All are part of your ancestry, no matter what they are named!.
