Question: Where did your "Y" chromosome and your "X" chromosome originate from!?
My "Y" originated in Europe!.(Ireland)
My "X" originated in West Africa!.

I'm male so that's why I have an XY!.

Females have XX!.

"Y" comes from all one's forefathers but are inherited only by male children!.

Mitochondrial "X" comes from all one's foremothers and are inherited by both male and female children!.

Of course, going back far enough we all originated in African with African DNA but 30-60k yrs ago what makes me male was a European man from Ireland!. And he looked like my grandfather who I now look like (only slightly darker)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Y DNA is passed soley from father to son!. Mitochondrial DNA is passed from mother to both sons and daughters but only the daughters pass it on to their children!.

Now, your Y & Mitochondrial are really only a small part of your total DNA!. They are used in genealogy testing as they go in a definite line back!.

Most of our DNA is autosomal!. We get it 50-50 from both parents!. It is the only DNA that relates a female to her father or a person to the spouses of their direct male line and direct female line ancestors!.

For instance if you get back to you 6xgreat grandparents, if thre are no duplicates, you will be directly descended from 510 people!.
Out of that 510, you will have the Y DNA of only 8 and the mitochondrial DNA of only 8!.
However, you share the autosomal DNA from all 510!.

I said "if there are no duplicates!." As you go back you will probably find, for instance, a great great grandparent in one family line was your great great great great grandparent in another family line!. Actually, many people discover they are married to a distant cousin after doing their family history!.

I had a mitochondrial done and it took me back 35,000 years to Iran!. I am in Haplogroup K1 which surprised me!. My materrnal grandfather was a Jew but my maternal grandmother's line is 100% American colonial!. The southern colonies had English, Scots, ScotchIrish(called Ulster Scots in Britain), people from one of the German states(hers came from Alsace) and French Huguenots!. She was born in 1873 and was a blend of all those things!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

My maternal X is from Belgium!. My paternal X is from Poland!. But I'll disagree with the belief that we all originated in Africa!. It's a theory and a decent theory!. But it lacks scientific certainty!. Just because Lucy was unearthed and no one's found anything older is irrelevant!. It's just as irrelevant as the theory we were taught as children that we all descended from Neanderthal man!. Then they found that Neanderthals weren't even in our species!.

Science has no absolutes about the origins of our species just yet!. I don't believe Africa is the birthplace of humanity any more than I believe Germany is!. We all have a common origin, but where it is remains to be seen!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Actually, the X chromosome could come from your maternal grandfather!. He did supply the second X chromosome for your mother!.

The Y chromosome came from a mutated X chromosome that created sex differences!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
