Question: The surname Mnu!?
I have someone in my family tree with the surname of Mnu, born in England, but it doesn't sound English to me!. Kinda sounds Scandinavian to me!? If anyone can help me out that would be great!? What is it's nationality, where is it found the most!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Slap yourself on the forehead and turn red, child!. We've all done it!.

You'll also see "GNU", which looks like someone named their child after a wildebeest until you realize it is "Given Name Unknown"!.

You find a death record for Paige Turner, who is recorded as Paige Breaks, maiden name Turner, birth date spot on, so you know she married a GNU Breaks, and you hope he was Don, but you are pretty sure he wasn't!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If it is a woman you are referring to, the Mnu stands for "maiden name unknown"!. In other words, genealogy abbreviations take up less space on the family record sheets!.

For example, I found these on familysearch!.org:
Alice MUSSER (MNU)--spouse's name Henry Platt MUSSER (so, only her married name was known)

This listing shows only a last name:
(Fnu) RAWLINGS (MNU) - her spouse's name was Arron RAWLINGS, Jr!. (in this case, only the lady's married name was known!. Her first name and maiden name were both unknown!.

Does that solve the problem!?!?Www@QuestionHome@Com
