THEY have compiled the information, and charge for their expenses, and to make money!. After all!.!. it is them that has done the research, not to mention, paying for the website and internet service!. I don't know what you consider "basic" information!. What you want, may or may not be public records to begin with!. Certain records (court records) are public!.!. but nothing requires the court to put them on the internet!. Other records (birth certificates) are restricted information, except for those who have the legal rights to know it!. Part of finding "information" is knowing EXACTLY what you want to know, if it is or isn't public info, then finding IF it is online or not!. Takes time, energy, and knowledge!. That time and knowledge is what you pay for!. When you are doing genealogy (researching someone who is dead), all the options become different!.
