There are lots of websites!. Ancestry!.Com I feel is the best for its records!. However, you cannot take as absolute fact everything you see in their family trees, in case you find some of your family lines, or family trees on ANY website, free or paid!. The family tree information is subscriber submitted and mostly not documented!. You might see different information from different subscribers on the same people!. Then you will see repeatedly the same information on the same people from different subscribers!. That is no guarantee at all it is correct!.

If you find Ancestry!.Com too pricey, your public library might have a subscripton to it you can use!.

Another good free source is a Family History Center at a Latter Day Saints(Mormon) Church!. They have records on people all over the world, not just Mormons!. However you should call them or visit their website, FamilySearch!.org, to find out their hours for the general public!. In Salt Lake City, they have the world's largest genealogical collection!. Their Family History Centers can order microfilm for you to view at a nominal fee!.

First, if you haven't, get as much information from living family as possible, particularly your senior members!. Tape them if they will let you!. They might be confused on some things, but what might seem to be insignificant story telling might turn out to be very significant!.

There are MANY websites with SUBMITTED family trees, and you might find that one (or more) of your ancestors are in these!. The operative word here is submitted, meaning someone has done the research already, and by option, uploaded it to somewhere!. It is common to think that "everyone's" tree is online somewhere, which is totally wrong!.
The other important thing to keep in mind is that family trees are NORMALLY persons who are dead!. It is both risky and contrary to genealogy good standards to post info about someone living, on the internet!. There should not be info online to show that your parents are so and so!.!. or that their parents are so and so!. The usual route is to research your immediate (recent) family IN PRIVATE, then when you reach the early 1900s or late 1800s, you might stumble onto records of some of them!.
More than anything, it takes experience to recognize the difference between what is online and an actual record!. ANYONE can compile a family tree and make statements!. I could say that my parents were ANYONE, and no one is out there, to prove it is right or not right!. What someone posts is NOT necessarily an original record!. If someone puts an image of someone's death certificate online!.!.THAT is a record, made at the time of the event!. Another "original" record that you can find (usually on ancestry!.com) is a census record, which is a scan of the original record!. Typed summaries (extracts) is not the same thing!.
