Question: Do you know if your family name was changed when your family came to this country!.!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Yes, from "Odle", which is an English name for a Parrish in Bedford, England, to "O'Dell", which sounds Irish, but isn't!

LOL, try reading the history of Ireland and find that your family is actually one of the English opressors!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I know for a fact it wasn't even though it seems like it was a prime candidate to be changed!. It's one of those awkward German ones no one can say, spell or pronounce!. (I'm distinguishing between say & pronounce as say -- once I tell it to someone, no one can say it back correctly & pronounce -- no one can look at it and pronounce it!.) The irony is that the way we say it was Americanized; when I was in Germany I couldn't recognize it when the Germans said my last name!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

A way to tell is if it is too easy and doesn't match the language , for instance if your last name was Kitt and your nationality is Lithuanian!. or if your ancestors were from India and your name is Smith!.

The technical Analyst: Don't worry about being the oppressor, after reading a lot of history, I figure that in history everyone that could beat the c**p out of anyone else, usually did!.

I also believe my ancestors are interesting, don't take credit or blame for their actions!. I knew I would meet up with some not so stellar ones eventually and sure enough, one of them was a deserter during the Civil War in the Indiana Union forces!. Who knew, maybe he got hungry and went home!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes I know for a fact!.
My O'Brian ancestors became simply Bryan!. My Welzel ancestors became Whelchel!. My Cossart ancestors became Cozart and many other variants!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

changed every time my family moved!. Thayne in scotland!. to Thain in Canada to Thane in the USAWww@QuestionHome@Com

Yep!. We came from Russia as Takalinko (I'm not sure the spelling)
But now it's Howen, which is Irish, I think!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
