The answer to your question is, yes ! They are both of the same ethnicity!.
Austria and Germany have a common language and are now independent countries but they do share a common heritage,
in fact with a large part of Europe!.

The History of Germany began with the establishment of the nation from Ancient Roman times to the 8th century and then continued into the Holy Roman Empire dating all the way from the 9th century until 1806!. At its largest, the territory of this empire included what today is Germany, Austria, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, western Poland, the Low Countries, eastern France, Switzerland and most of northern Italy!. After the mid 16th century, when it had lost many former territories, it was known as the "Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation"!.

Otto von Bismarck successfully waged war on Denmark in 1864!. Prussian victory in the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 enabled him to create the North German Federation (Norddeutscher Bund) and to exclude Austria, formerly the leading German state, from the affairs of the remaining German states!.
The state known as Germany was unified as a modern nation-state in 1871, when the German Empire was forged, with the Kingdom of Prussia as its largest constituent!.

Hitler thought they were part of the German race, but they disagreed!. To be honest, Germany has only been a country since 1871, while Austria has been considered its own country for over 700 years!. So they may have some genetic and ethnic links, but so do the Swiss, Poles and Dutch, but they're not part of a master race!. For as much as they have in common, they have even more differences!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

When you get into doing GENEALOGY, the way something is worded, makes a huge, huge difference!.
German and Austrian are not different "races" at all!. If you got interested in the background of the term 'race' itself!.!. you will find that what they defined as "race" 250 yrs ago!.!.is not the same as defined today!. Nationality and ethnicity are also flexible terms!.
You don't say if you had an ancestor born in Austria or not, so no clue why Austrian is part of the question!. In my opinion!.!.!. EVEN if you have an ancestor born there!.!. it can be debatable to say "part this" or "part that"!. At the time when one of my ancestors was born!.!. there was no Poland, it was part of Germany!. But, he spoke Polish!.
To be accurate!.!. my advice is to state that your ancestor was born in such and such a location!. Going into being part something is an invitation to misunderstanding!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

silly you there is only one race of humans, but several ethnicity groups, and cultural groups!. After having been in Austria and Germany I would say that both once had a similar connection, but are now two separate and distinct groups!. They both speak a version of German!. It is like trying to decide whether an American is English, Irish, or from Australia!.

You need to find the date of which your family was in a specific area, the location, and name of who, then compare it to historical facts, then you will be able to tell whether your family comes from more of a German ancestry or more of an Austrian ancestry!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
