I second the lady above me; "Change ringer"!. The print you are reading may be blurred, or the typesetter may have goofed!.

It is quite the thing in England!. Dorothy Sayers wrote a whole Lord Peter Wimsely novel about it, "The Nine Tailors"!. I'm not English!. From the novel I get the feeling it was a hobby, not an occupation!.

Google it with "Change" instead of "Charge" and you'll get tons of hits!.

This assumes your man was a Brit or lived in a country with a strong British heritage!. If he was Chinese, Cherokee or Zulu, we are wrong!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

are you sure it wasn't a "change ringer"!?

Change ringing is a system of ringing church bells in set patterns (changes)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
