You can go beyond getting his personal records (which is good in itself), and dig into historical background!. Many of these sites include such things as rosters, databases, so forth!. Once you have his specifics, you might also look directly for info on his ship, unit, so forth!. It is NOT impossible to find persons who might have been on that ship!.
Websites can be the tip of the iceberg!. This one has links!.!. and since the person has a deep interest, he may also have resources beyond what is online/ his page!.

Look in the phone book for your local veterans association!. Call them and they will hook you up with the paper work to get copies of his DD214 and also ask them about any metals or awards that may be owed to him!. I got 5 Army metals that were owed to my Dad!. I wish I would have done it before he passed!. He would have been proud!. also they pay for a bronze cemetary marker that can be used as a flat headstone or attached the the back of a stone, and they give you a flag hoder if you got one when he passed!. This is more than you asked for but many people don't know all that they are entitled too!.
Anyway the DD214 tells all of his info!.
Good luck in the Navy!. My husband was Navy and he says its great!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
