Position:Home>Genealogy> Is Perivoliotis a Jewish last name?

Question:Perivoliotis is a Greek surname.
Judaism is not a nationality, it is a religion which can attract people belonging to any nationality, so any surname could belong to someone who is of the Jewish faith.
However I would add that some surnames do appear to be
more "Jewish", than others, but Perivoliotis is not one of those.

Almost any name can be Jewish. When surnames were taken Jews took names based on occupaton, where they lived or some characteristic about them like everyone else. A lot of names in the U.S. appear to be Jewish as a large portion of the immigrants to this country with those names were Jewish while back in their home countries the same names were used by Jews and non Jews alike.

Also Orthodox and Conservative Judaism define a Jew by the mother not the father.
They state they get the nation from the mother and the tribe from the father. IF they don't have a Jewish father they belong to the tribe of the nearest male relative on the mother's side of the family. They state a person who does not have a Jewish mother can only be a Jew by converting to Judaism.

The Reform Jews don't view it the same way.
