so my grandma has a sister, who had a daughter, who had a son..

Your grandmother's sister is your grand aunt or great aunt.

Her daughter is first cousin to your mother or dad, and your first cousin once removed.

The son is your second cousin. When you have children and he has children, those children will be third cousins.

Removed is when you go up or down a level, and your parents are up one level. Your grandmother's cousins are your cousins twice removed, and so on.

Going "down" a level, your cousins' children are your cousins once removed, and their grandchildren are your cousins twice removed.

Marrying a cousin (first, second, first once removed . . .) was very common in the USA before 1880 or so. In some counties, if you wanted to marry a white person, it was a cousin or nothing. There is a line in "Gone With the Wind" about it; some family or other "always marries their cousins".

As long as hemophilia or some other genetic disorder doesn't run in your family, you are OK. If you date and break it off because he turns out to be a cad, or you turn out to be unkind, there will be some awkward pauses at family gatherings ever after.

COUSIN OR BROTHER

SECOND COUSINS!!!

'Removed' indicates that the two people being compared are a different number of generations away from their common ancestor.

I think that would be your second cousin, since you share the same great grandparents.

the sister is your great-aunt

the daughter is your great-aunt's daughter, or your mother's cousin

the son, is your great aunt's grandchild, or your second cousin. i believe

good luck!

i have no idea what twice removed means.

He would be your second cousin....your grandmothers sister is for some reason considered your great aunt, which would make her daughter your cousin, in turn making her son your second cousin.

He is your second brother.

K your grandma sister is also like your grandma
Her daughter is your aunt. That makes your mother/father and her 1st cousin.

There son and you are twice apart. So you'll become second cousin.

Your grandma's sister was your mohter's aunt, so your grandma's sister's daughter was your mother's cousin, so... your mother's cousin is your second cousin. The daughter's son is your third cousin.

X x
grandma grandma's sister
your mother the sister had a daughter
((your mom and your grandma's daughter are cousins)
the daughter had a son
The son is your mom's second cousin
The son is your cousin, thrice removed, or your third cousin.

You are 2nd cousins to this young man. A relationship would be questionable with your family members, but hardly illegal or "too close". There is enough genetic differences between you and him to not cause any problem. You and him only share 1/4 of the same genes.

"Removed" is the difference in generations have to the same COMMON ancestor. In this situation, you do not determine relationship by your and his grandmother. You have to go back one more generation to the COMMON ancestor which would be your great-grandparents.

So your grandmother and his grandmother are sisters. Your mother and his mother are first cousins because their mothers are sisters. Your mother and this young man would be first cousins once removed........because the COMMON ancestor is grandmother to your mother, but is the great-grandmother to this young man. (And likewise, your mother's first cousin would be your first cousin once removed.) So, he is ONE more generation removed from the common ancestor he has with your mother. YOU and this young man are the exact same distance in relationship from the common ancestor. Since the common ancestor is a great-grandparent (only one "great") then you and him are 2nd cousins.

Second Cousins.
Because you're great-grandparents (your grandma's parents) are the first common ancestors you have.
The term 'removed' is used if you are at different levels in your family tree. Some further understanding can come by clicking on the sources below.
Additionally, it was not unusual (and in some cases currently) for first cousins to marry so second cousins getting together is not that weird.

2nd cousins ...it isnt that bad for you to date if ur 2nd cousins...its more of a taboo nowadays if it was ur 1st cousin...but 2nd isnt too bad... although i wouldnt get with my 2nd cousin because that is just too wierd cos i come from quite a close family...
