Position:Home>Genealogy> How are you supposed to pronounce the last name "Giges"?

Question:G - gis

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: G - gis

Depends on where you ask. I imagine in a French-speaking country, it would be something like "zhee-zh." In an English-speaking country, probably "jig-es" or "jigs."

it sounds/looks like jees or jeegs

www.ancestry.com didn't have the listing of Giges, but one of the varied spellings on www.familysearch.org was GEGG. So, looking back on ancestry.com, it says: Gegg is a form of
GECK.:

Geck Name Meaning and History
North German: nickname from Middle Low German "geck" or ‘"fool".
German: from a short form of Jacob, which in turn means:.

Jacob Name Meaning and History
Jewish, English, German, Portuguese, French, Dutch, and southern Indian: derivative, via Latin Jacobus, from the Hebrew personal name "ya‘aqobh" (Yaakov). In the Bible, this is the name of the younger twin brother of Esau (Genesis 25:26), who took advantage of the latter's hunger and impetuousness to persuade him to part with his birthright ‘for a mess of potage’. The name is traditionally interpreted as coming from Hebrew "akev" for ‘"heel"’, and Jacob is said to have been born holding on to Esau's heel. In English Jacob and James are now regarded as quite distinct names, but they are of identical origin (see James), and in most European languages the two names are not distinguished. It is used as a given name among Christians in India, and in the U.S. has come to be used as a surname among families from southern India.

www.familysearch.org varied spellings: GAUGE ; GAGE ; GIGG ; GEGG ; GAGGE ; GEAGES; GAICHE ; GEG; GAITCH; GAG ; GAWGE; GYGGE; GAYCHE ; GEGE ; GIGGES ; GAGGS ; GAIGE; and GIGH.

The earliest listing I found with a varied spelling is:
Adam de Gauge - Of Essex, , Essex, England
Birth: About 1220
Death: 1287
Father: John de Gaugi (I would assume he was born circa 1200)
