Question:i was told it was from the ukraine where my husbands father was born,but when i go on the ukrainian websites,the name does not appear,if any ukranians out there please help,thank you.

At a guess, I'd say Polish. There were numerous battles in that part of Europe and the border swung back and forth a number of times so although your husband's father was born in the Ukraine, that doesn't mean his family was Ukrainian.

but it sounds more like latvian 2 me well my friends just agreed with me they r lituanians.

The spelling seems odd. Or maybe even wrong. ost means East and Stasz probably means state. This name is indicative of where your ancestors are from. Easterrn part of Ukraine.

If you put the name in google as to its origin it comes up every time as Polish.
