Question:Can anybody give me any information about the last name Vessechia. It is my dads last name and through countless efforts on my behalf, I havent been able to find out where it comes from or anything. The only Vessechias I know are me, my 2 sisters, my father and my mother (they are divorced, but she keeps my dads name). Does anyone have any information that would help me? It is pronounced Vah-say-key-ah

It seems the surname is Italian. I looked for a Vessechia obituary anywhere in the USA and found:
VESSECHIA ANGELO G : April 22, 2004, age 76, of Dearborn Heights. Beloved husband of the late Beverly. Dearest father of Michael (Jan), Carla (John) Howard, Debbie Sawyer, Mark (Shelly), Angela Vessechia and the late Terry. Loving grandfather of Tara, Stephen, Ashley, Austin, Aaron, Alexis, Carolyn, Melanie, Ron and the late David. Dear brother of Lucille Leone and the late Peter. Visitation Sunday 1-9 p.m. at the Harry J. Will Funeral Home, 25450 Plymouth Road, Redford. Celebration of Life Service Monday 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Cremation rites were accorded.

Then I looked for Angelo on the 1930 Census and found:
1930; Census Place: Detroit, Wayne, Michigan;

Michael Vassick, 38, born Italy, immigrated 1909, laborer for electric company
Ellen Vassick, 26, b NY of Italian parents
Lucille Vassick, 6, b PA
Peter Vassick, 4 2/12, b PA
Angelo Vassick, 2 1/12, b PA

I got nothin'..sorry.

Genealogy sites might be of some use. Also, you should talk to your family if you can - grandparents would be good because they can tell you more about your family name. However, your dad should be able to tell you your ancestry and that might help your search. Keep in mind that when a lot of people migrated to the US their names were changed - my mom's family actually choose to change the German spelling of their name to an English version because there were so many people in our area with the same last name (and first name apparently). It's possible that over time your family's name has had the spelling changed. I did find Vessechia online with a search but it's not very frequent.

I would check if any of these people are related to you. If they are you can request a copy of their application for their Social Security Number. The information includes their full name, parents, parent's birthplace, birthdate and birthplace, and occupation.

sometimes if you have a bit more information you can then find the "missing link" that leads you to more information someone else has gathered.

You'll find two books about Vessechia, both public domain, and both fully downloadable....:
http://books.google.com/books?q=Vessechi...

Unfortunately, they're both written in Italian, about Italian Vessechias, and that language is Greek to me!

Happy hunting!
