Question:My grandpa's last name was Montelongo.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: My grandpa's last name was Montelongo.

You question reinforces something we discuss here almost daily.
In the 1900 census, there were 21 persons with this name in the US, and ALL of these were either born in Mexico.. or their parents were born in Mexico. By 1930, there were about 300 persons with the name, again.. the majority show origins in Mexico.
I truly wish we could convince people of how completely USELESS places such as houseofnames, and others like it, are. If your grandfather's parents (or grandparents) can be shown by a valid document to come from a certain country, then that is the factual evidence. The fact that there is or isn't a village in Italy, of the name, is something that is generic, based on a generality, and 99.9% of the time, is not factually connected to your own ancestors.
If you know the name(s) of grandpa's parents, and if they were in the US prior to 1930, I would be happy to look for their record.
Sorry for the rant... I repeat, this question of name origin versus origin of FAMILY/ ANCESTORS is probably the most frequent question we have. I am saddened that people are confused, because they use the "easy" way out, instead of taking just a bit of time to do some actual research.

I do ancestry research and with a little bit of info i could help you

It's Italian, from Treviso.

Google "the name Montelongo" and you'll find yourself on a great site: family coat of arms, etc.!

There is a Montelongo in Italian ancestry. It's an older name. Been around for awhile. It could very easily be Latin. So....that means it could also be Spanish. And unfortunately, the area between Spain and Italy.
We had the same problem with a friend of mine who swore she was half Mexican. Until we did a little family history. Her family had never been in Mexico, but coastal eastern Spain.

It's initially Italian. Found a website that tells the brief introduction of the name. Hopefully this helps.

They had it in 2 different places.
Galician: habitational name from places so named in Ourense and A Coru?a in Galicia.
Italian: habitational name from Montelongo in Campobasso province, so named from monte ‘mountain’ + longo ‘long’.
