Position:Home>Genealogy> Does any one Know where i can find were my last name came from and meaning?

Question:A couple of things come into the question, Benjamin.
Many common names have been researched, as to the "ancient" beginnings, so to speak. Last names come from several things..physical description, job (Smith is one of the easier examples), sometimes the name comes from the name of the town/village of origin. In fact, certain names will NOT have just one locality that it came from.
Other names come from a foreign language, in that case, you have to find a source from that language. Still other names are completely different from the original .. they are variations in spelling, or got "garbled" around the time of immigration. An example from my research is Dolphay. It will not be found anywhere.. because when the family was worked back, we learned that the immigrants name was Dauphinais.
If (for instance), you have a Hispanic type name.. you might conclude this makes you Spanish. Not necessarily.. since Spanish settlers went to many places all over the world. You'll find many Spanish type names in the Phillipines, or South America, etc.
My advice is that it is more reliable to trace your actual family members, to learn their origin. If you aren't interested in that, remember that it is normally best to use a "scholarly" source (Dictionary of American names, for example). Please..avoid any places that sell such things as family crests, histories, or key chains. They are KNOWN to be misleading, if not completely wrong.

Google it.

Go down to enter surname.

Look in the genealogy section of your local library.
Also, many websites offer name meanings.
I've listed a few.

To find what out where your last name came from is track and see were your grandfathers, grandfather you know go a bit back in your family tree and last names usually come because of a job or an incident.
